Le Morne sits beneath the UNESCO-listed mountain of the same name, at the quieter south-western tip of the island, prized by kitesurfers for its reliable wind and by everyone else for the view. A car from here makes the most of the south coast — Black River Gorges National Park, the wild coastline towards Baie du Cap, and the calmer roads compared with the busier north. Our counter is close to the resort cluster at the foot of the mountain, with hotel and public parking both available nearby. The drive to Chamarel and the Seven Coloured Earths takes about twenty minutes, and the road north to Flic-en-Flac hugs the coast for one of the most scenic short drives on the island.

Any of our cars handles the coast road. For the climb to Chamarel and Black River Gorges, a car with a bit more power, like the Toyota Raize, is more comfortable.
